To whom it may concern,
Todd Sparks aka Todd the Party Doctor, asked me to write a letter of recommendation for him. I don’t do letters of recommendations, to me they are pretty much worthless, because who asks for a letter of recommendation from someone that is not going to spin things in their favor. What I can do is write a statement of facts that will help you make an informed decision.
I first worked with Todd in 1989 at Pineapple Willies in Panama City Beach Florida. I was a bartender at this establishment. A night shift was either at the interior bar, or the beach bar for the Todd the Party Dr. show. Everyone wanted to work Todd’s shows because you made twice the money in half the time. His audience interactive show encourages the sales of high profit shooters, and tipping.
After that summer, I moved back to Atlanta, and finished my degree in hospitality at Georgia State University. I was running a bar in Lilburn Georgia, that featured live entertainment. On a whim I called Todd and asked him if he ever went on the road. He said he would play at my bar, but he wanted ten times what I normally payed a band, plus a hotel room. I knew the owner would never go for it so I agreed to pay him out of my own pocket. We never charged cover, but I decided to sell tickets for the show. Keep in mind this is before the internet and cell phones were in wide use. I put up some flyers in the bar, and Todd contacted some people on his mailing list. My word of mouth combined with Todd’s efforts quickly sold the place out. I had one guy who called me and paid me an extra $100 for a table up front.
I had Todd back once a month in his off season from the beach and it was always a great success. My average bar ticket went up 250% and my staff got tipped at a much higher percentage than the normal crowd.
I left the bar business in 1997, but still have friends in the bar business who have booked Todd as recently as before the pandemic. He fills his venues, the average per ticket increases, the average tip percentage goes up, and everyone re-books. The only people that aren’t happy are the kitchen staff who get slammed and still get the same hourly rate.
Todd’s show is audience interactive, everyone has a great time. When he was doing the show at the beach, people often just wondered in to see what was going on. They always stayed, and often you saw them the next day, and they brought extra people with them.
